If you’re a man who avoids taking your shirt off or hide under baggy sweatshirts to hide the extra tissue on your chest, or if you simply want a firmer and flatter chest with a more masculine contour, male breast reduction may be right for you.
What is male breast reduction?
Male breast reduction surgery is for men affected by excessive tissue (gynecomastia) on one or both breasts. During male breast reduction, Dr. O’Brien will remove excess breast tissue, and sculpt the remaining tissues to create a more masculine look.
Am I a good candidate for male breast reduction?
If are over the age of 18, have undergone puberty, not considerably overweight, and are healthy and emotionally stable, you may wish to consider male breast reduction.
If you are overweight, you are advised to first attempt to correct the problem through weight loss, as obesity can lead to the appearance of male breasts. Men who undergo male breast reduction should be at or near their ideal weight, or less than 30 pounds overweight. If you are overweight and have a significant amount of fatty tissue in the chest area, you may want to consider liposuction alone to correct the issue.
Most patients find that the full results of male breast reduction are visible in about six months. Dr. O’Brien finds that the overwhelming majority of patients are very pleased with the results of their male breast reduction.
How long is recovery from male breast reduction surgery?
Plan to spend several days recuperating from surgery before gradually returning to your normal activity level. Dr. O’Brien will remove your stitches about a week after the procedure, when you return for a follow-up visit to check your recovery progress.
You can expect to feel some discomfort or tenderness in the chest area. Any pain you feel can be controlled with medications. Common side effects include bruising, swelling, and temporary numbness caused by the disruption of nerve connections. These side effects can be expected whether you undergo excision-only breast reduction or procedures involving liposuction. Most of these side effects should subside within a week or two, although some degree of swelling or numbness may last up to six months.
