About Dysport

Plastic surgeon Dr. John J. O'Brien Jr. offers St. Petersburg, FL women and men several nonsurgical procedures for rejuvenating the skin. Dysport is an injectable wrinkle relaxer that acts like BOTOX to soften and reduce unsightly wrinkles and lines throughout the face. Dynamic wrinkles are formed by recurrent facial expressions and movements (like frowning, laughing, and smiling) that over time make the muscles of the face taut. This causes the skin over the muscle to have a furrowed line that can be seen even when the face is resting. Dysport is uniquely designed to address the most frequent dynamic wrinkles: the frown lines that show up as vertical lines between the eyebrows. It temporarily softens the treated muscle so the dynamic wrinkle is smooth, but with natural-looking results that don't give you a "frozen" face. Ideal Candidates for Dysport

Dysport is a good choice if you want a nonsurgical procedure to address mild, moderate, or severe vertical glabellar (frown) lines that appear between the eyebrows. Since dynamic wrinkles and lines are created by frequent use, they may become visible in younger patients and make you appear sad, mad, or tired. Dysport is an effective, fast treatment that corrects dynamic wrinkles without leaving a "frozen" appearance. Since Dysport's formula expands to reach a group of wrinkles, it's also great for Crow's feet, the small wrinkles in the corners of the eyes. Many patients at St. Petersburg Center for Plastic Surgery notice visible improvement in their dynamic wrinkles 1 – 3 days following their injections that usually remain for as long as four months.

Procedure Technique for Dysport

Injections of Dysport are done in one of our procedure rooms following your consultation with Dr. O'Brien, lasting around 15 – 30 minutes. A local anesthetic or numbing cream is generally unnecessary because the Dysport is injected using a fine needle that creates very little pain, but it may be applied if requested. The treatment area will be cleaned and the Dysport injections will be made across the eyebrows, followed with a cold compress to limit bruising and swelling. Following your procedure, you may resume your usual routine but you should avoid touching your face for at least a day.

What to Expect from Dysport

Following a Dysport session, you may notice mild redness and swelling near the injected area, but this typically will resolve within 1 – 3 days. You should sleep propped up for the first night and may want to apply cold compresses if needed. Improvements are often noticeable in 1 –3 days as the appearance of your lines is decreased for a softer, smoother appearance. Your results should remain for around 3 – 4 months and touch-up injections may be scheduled at our office to extend your results.

Frequently Asked Questions for Dysport

How much does Dysport cost?
Your cost is based on how much Dysport is used to achieve your goals. In your consultation, your injector will develop your personalized treatment plan so they can estimate your cost. Ask if we have any specials on Dysport at St. Petersburg Center for Plastic Surgery and which methods of payment we take.

What's the difference between Dysport and BOTOX?
BOTOX and Dysport are injections that correct dynamic wrinkles. Results from Dysport usually develop quicker compared to BOTOX. Also, Dysport has longer-lasting results compared to other relaxers and it is better for larger areas. In your first appointment, your injector will determine whether Dysport or BOTOX is ideal for you.

Should I get Dysport or a wrinkle filler?
Many patients do not understand the different uses for wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers. A wrinkle relaxer corrects dynamic wrinkles whereas a dermal filler addresses static lines. Dynamic wrinkles are the result of repetitive motions, such as frowning, smiling, laughing, and other expressions. Dysport relaxes the creased muscle under the skin to smooth the dynamic wrinkle. Static lines are the result of low skin elasticity, so the injection fills or plumps the area to make it look smooth. In your consult, your injector will ask about your goals to help you choose if Dysport, a dermal filler, or a mix of both will deliver your desired outcome.

Can Dysport be combined with other treatments?
St. Petersburg Center for Plastic Surgery performs several cosmetic treatments, which may be added to enhance your Dysport results. Based on your concerns and wants, your personalized plan might include Dysport, an injectable filler for static lines, plus a skin treatment. We encourage you to be honest during your consult so we can develop a plan that delivers amazing results.

How often should I get Dysport injections?
Your Dysport results may be visible for 3 – 4 months. In your initial consultation, your injector will recommend how often you should schedule appointments at our office in St. Petersburg, FL to sustain your results. You might want to get treatments more often or further apart once you see how long your initial results last.
